Policies and Procedures

Central to every business is the importance of building and maintaining correct policies and procedures. All organisations have policies and procedures that guide how decisions are made and how the work is done in the organisation. Written and applied correctly they have the potential to increase business efficiencies and if ignored they can damage your business.

Policies describe the agreed practices of an organisation; it is a framework for organisations that stipulates actions required for efficiency. Policies describe the rules that are expressed; in standard sentences and include what, when and who.

Procedures are the critical steps undertaken to implement the policy. Contained within the procedure are lists of steps to follow in order to comply with the policy, responsibility for each step, rules, regulations, methods, timing, place and personnel responsible for accomplishing the policy as stated in the policy section. Procedures can be in many forms including flowcharts, checklists and written steps.

Unwritten policies and procedures often lead to confusion and conflict. However, implementing policies pertinent to your organisation has the potential to create and maintain efficiencies.
